Minister Rachel Oliver -Cobbin

Rachel was born in Burlington, NC, and spent most of her growing years in Graham.   She is a 1984 graduate of Hugh M. Cummings High School.  Upon graduation, she moved to Boston, MA, and attended Emerson College and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Broadcast Journalism from UNC-Greensboro.  After living and working across the nation from New York to Los Angeles, Rachel, who believes in putting family first, moved back to Elon to be near her loved ones.  She is the daughter of Mr. James C. and Dr. Donna H. Oliver of Elon.  She is married to Keith J. Cobbin, formerly of Youngstown, OH, and they are the proud parents of 9-year-old son, Cameron and 7 year old daughter, Raina.

Rachel has received many accolades and awards in her career as a winning beauty queen, professional singer and accomplished actress. She has traveled the world as the 4th lead female vocalist in the internationally renowned R&B band, Atlantic Starr with whom she recorded 5 albums and appeared on a number of television shows such as Arsenio Hall, Soul Train and Showtime at the Apollo.  Her travels have allowed her to share the stage with many superstars, to meet many dignitaries and even US Presidents, but she says her most rewarding life experiences are those of serving others and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Rachel learned from her experiences as Miss Black Massachusetts and Miss Black America 1986 and being a national role model that she had a passion for helping young women to develop high self esteem, self respect and self reliance.  She has influenced many young men and women through the years by founding and directing the Miss Teen African American Scholarship Pageant and Development Program, by coordinating The Girls as Precious Pearls and Boys to Men Mentoring Ministry at her church, Ebenezer United Church of Christ, and through her participation in the Burlington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and The Burlington-Graham Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.  Through her entertainment company, SouthPaw Entertainment, she also trains young people to be vocalists, actors, and public speakers, and using her God given talents, she inspires them to dream big, while passionately pursuing a great education and working hard, so that when opportunity meets preparation, success can take place!
